If there’s one thing that’s universally true about kids, it’s that they want to snack all day long. All. The. Time. And honestly? Same. So why not lean into it and make snack time a little festive and a whole lot of fun?

This DIY Patriotic Trail Mix station is one of my favorite 4th of July ideas because it does double duty, it’s a snack AND an activity. You set out bowls of goodies, let the kids mix and match whatever they like, and fill their own little bags. As a side quest activity, we also challenged the kids to make an American flag and fireworks with their snack items, they thought it was so fun to play with their food.
This activity keeps little hands busy, it’s completely customizable for picky eaters, and you end up with a big batch of patriotic trail mix that the whole family will be snacking on for days. Win, win, and win.

With summer heat making outdoor time tricky in the middle of the day, this is the perfect inside activity to set up while you’re prepping everything else for the cookout. It’s low-mess, low-stress, and the kids absolutely love feeling like they made something themselves.

Our Kid-Approved Patriotic Trail Mix Station Ingredients:
Set out small bowls of each ingredient and let the kids scoop, mix, and taste to their heart’s content! Provide individual snack bags or small cups so each kid can fill their own. It makes the whole thing feel like a special treat, and they’re so proud of what they made!
- Cheerios (Honey Nut, Fruity and Frosted)
- Pretzels
- Popped Popcorn
- Dried Fruit (like cranberries or strawberries for color)
- Blue and Red M&M’s
- Mini marshmallows
- Nuts (only if you know there are no allergies)
- Red or patriotic themed candies
- Reusable Snack Bags

The great thing is that you can suit the ingredients to your crowd’s needs and taste preferences. I like to keep things balanced and healthy when possible, but since this is for a holiday festivity, I added in some candies. I love that I can recreate this set-up all throughout the year and replace the candies with other healthier options!
Tips for Hosting the Station:
- Label each bowl with a little flag toothpick or festive label so kids know what’s what (you can also tape the logo or part of the packaging to the bowl for kids who can’t read but might recognize the box or bag)
- Set out a big mixing bowl too for anyone who wants to combine everything into one giant shareable batch
- Add a scoop or tongs to each bowl to keep it easy and mess-free
- Make extra – this trail mix stores well in an airtight container for up to a week!

Don’t Forget the Scavenger Hunt!
What’s better than taking your own personalized patriotic trail mix out on the trail?? Because there’s nothing like making a list and checking it twice (oh wait, wrong holiday), we put together a patriotic scavenger hunt to pair along with your bag-o-goodies!
It’s the perfect way to get the kids outside (during the cooler parts of the day!) and keep the Independence Day excitement going from morning all the way to fireworks time. Print it out, hand it off, and watch them go, it’s that easy.
