Chris and I have been slowly carving out time for just the two of us. Little pockets of adventure, connection, and rest. A couple of years ago, we explored the wild beauty of Alaska, and ever since, we’ve been dreaming up the next place to go. This year felt extra special. It was Chris’s 50th birthday, and Maine was the last U.S. state he hadn’t visited. So we made it happen.

There’s something about Maine that was calling us. The crisp ocean air was a refreshing break from Florida’s heat, the rugged coastline had us in awe, and the whole trip held that perfect blend of adventure and tranquility. Add in the vibrant changing colors of the fall leaves and it felt like a little slice of heaven for this (originally) midwestern girl’s heart.
I’m still thinking about those breathtaking sunsets and all of our cozy coastal moments.

Portland: Where Our Adventure Began
We flew into Portland and immediately fell in love with this charming city. For two nights, we made ourselves at home just south of downtown, perfectly positioned near the water. Each evening, we’d make our way to the beach, finding our favorite spot to watch the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink.

Our Portland days were filled with relaxing strolls through town, popping into little shops and coffee places we discovered along the way. At Elements: Books Coffee Beer, we lingered over lattes surrounded by shelves of stories (you can bet that I picked up a new book to read), it was the kind of place where time seems to slow down just enough. We spent a chilly afternoon at Sweetser’s Apple Barrel and Orchards, where the fall air was crisp and the apple cider donuts were still warm.

The iconic Bug Light Lighthouse became one of our favorite stops, there’s something about lighthouses that makes you feel like you’re standing at the edge of the world in the best possible way.

The highlight of our Portland stay? Sailing with Portland Schooner Co. There’s nothing quite like feeling the wind in your hair and the gentle rock of the waves beneath you as you glide past Portland’s stunning coastline. While sailing we had a delicious charcuterie board layered with all kinds of yumminess. The whole experience was pure magic.

The Coastal Drive: Portland → Camden (via Freeport, Damariscotta & More)
Leaving Portland, we eased into the road trip mode; windows down, playlists ready, eyes peeled for hidden gems in coastal Maine. On our way north toward Camden, we built in a few stops that made the drive just as much a part of the adventure as the destinations themselves.

Freeport & LL Bean Flagship
Our first stop was Freeport. You know we couldn’t resist the LL Bean Flagship Store in Freeport. On our way north, we made a quick stop and wandered through their massive space, picking up a few essentials for our adventures. There’s something comforting about an iconic Maine institution like LL Bean that got us even more excited for all that lay ahead.

Damariscotta: Pumpkin Stops & Charming Shops
Further along the coast we rolled into Damariscotta, which turned out to be a sweet surprise, even on a rainy day. We strolled through Main Street, explored boutiques and galleries (like Sheepscot River Pottery, The Kingfisher & The Queen, Citizen Maine Home) and ducked into Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop & Café.
Because it was fall, we were able to peek at some of the GIANT pumpkins for their upcoming festival!

Other Scenic Detours Worth Considering
If you have time or want flexibility, here are a few bonus stops that align well with the coastal drive:
- Bath / Maine Maritime Museum — Bath is on this route, and the Maine Maritime Museum is a compelling detour if you love ships, maritime history, and waterfront stories. Tripadvisor+1
- Wiscasset — A classic coastal town, home to Red’s Eats (famous lobster rolls) and historic Main Street charm.
Camden & Rockland: Where Mountain Meets Ocean
After saying goodbye to Portland, we made the scenic drive north along the coast, checking into the charming 250 Main Hotel in Rockland. This boutique hotel became our home base for exploring the midcoast, and we truly fell in love with it. From the moment we walked in, it felt like a warm, art-filled retreat. The design is modern and creative, with local artwork throughout and floor-to-ceiling windows that made us want to cozy up and never leave.

Our room had a view of the harbor, and we spent one morning walking right out on that harbor for sunrise, wrapped in blankets and sipping drinks as the sky turned from gold to blue.
Every detail inside felt thoughtful, and the staff made our stay extra special. Each evening, there was a complimentary wine tasting in the lobby, and throughout the day you could help yourself to tea, hot chocolate, and cozy vibes by the fireplace.

And the mornings? Heaven. The breakfast spread included fresh pastries, and the chocolate croissants were so good I’m still thinking about them. We’d absolutely stay there again.

And we couldn’t visit Rockland without walking the one-mile breakwater path out to the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse. With the ocean on both sides and the lighthouse slowly coming into view, it felt peaceful and a little bit magical. We even spotted a seal playing in the water alongside us, which made the whole experience (and long walk) so worth it.

In Camden, we discovered Owl and Turtle Bookshop Cafe, and as a coffee lover and book girly, it was basically made for me. With books in one hand and coffee in the other, I was in my happy place.

We also had one of the best meals of our trip at Buttermilk Kitchen, right on the water in Camden. Everything we ordered was so incredibly delicious. The pancakes were fluffy and packed with fresh Maine blueberries — a total dream. Chris got the crispy chicken sandwich served on fresh, made-from-scratch biscuits, and I have to admit, I stole more than one bite. We sipped on perfectly made lattes and lingered over every bite, not wanting the meal to end.

If you’re in Camden, you have to stop in. It’s cozy, welcoming, and full of local flavor in every sense.
Another can’t-miss experience while you’re in town is visiting Mount Battie. You can either hike up through Camden Hills State Park or take the auto road that winds to the summit. Once you’re at the top, the views are stunning. From the stone lookout tower, you’ll get panoramic vistas of Camden Harbor, Penobscot Bay, and the surrounding islands stretching out in every direction. It’s the kind of view that makes you stop and take a deep breath… the perfect blend of sea and sky.

Rock Climbing in Camden: A Bold, Beautiful Adventure
We spent one full day getting out of our comfort zones — and into climbing harnesses — with Equinox Guiding Service. Noah, the owner and our guide, took us on an unforgettable climbing adventure along the Camden cliffs. The combination of fall foliage, ocean air, and physical challenge made it one of our absolute favorite parts of the trip.

Chris, of course, was completely in his element and already wants to go back for ice climbing this winter. I’m not gonna lie, I was nervous (heights are not my favorite), but the views from the top were worth every shaky moment. By the end, I found my rhythm, and we both walked away with that mix of adrenaline and awe you only get from doing something that pushes you in the best way.
We both agreed… next time, we’re bringing the kids. It’s an experience we want to share with them, too.

Acadia: The Grand Finale
For our final adventure, we made our way to Acadia National Park, and it truly felt like the perfect way to wrap up our trip. From the moment we entered the park, we were surrounded by dramatic cliffs, crashing waves, and the glow of fall foliage. Every road, trail, and overlook felt like it belonged on a postcard.

We spent the day exploring the park, stopping for short hikes and scenic pull-offs that took our breath away. We let the day unfold slowly, savoring each new view and letting Acadia work its magic on us.

In the evening, we headed to Bass Harbor Head Light Station to catch the sunset. Perched on the rocks with the lighthouse standing tall behind us, we watched the sky light up in pinks and oranges, the waves crashing below. It felt like the perfect ending to an already unforgettable day.

Just outside the park, we spent time exploring Bar Harbor, and it quickly became a favorite stop. The town is lively and welcoming, with beautiful harbor views, cute shops, and some truly delicious food. Whether you’re walking along the water, browsing local boutiques, or enjoying a cozy meal, Bar Harbor is definitely worth a visit while you’re in the area. It was the ideal place to slow down, grab a warm drink, and reflect on the trip.
