I think that motherhood brings with it it’s own revealing set of milestones, though we don’t realize it until we’re full on in the midst of celebrating a new feat of our own little ones.

Brayden had his very first half-swallow, half-drool bites of the smoothest of cereals the other day, and in the middle of the cheers, the squeals, the raised arms and the clapping, there were tears.
Little tears, but tears nonetheless.
It’s something so small, so simple and yet at the same time, it’s so much more.  It’s knowing that breathy little gulp-gulp I’ve come to adore with hands searching to find my skin as he’s huddled up to my chest isn’t his sole source of sustenance.
It’s liberating and it’s daunting, a mother’s yin and yang.

He loves it.  And so, I do too.  I love the way his little feet kick like he’s doing the bicycle in an aerobics class as he catches a glimpse of the spoon.

I love the way his eyes sparkle and lips turn up to a beaming smile as we encourage his new-found skills.

I love the way his fists wrestle each other, becoming a chaser to each morsel.

And I love the way that, as a family, we experienced this, we grew. Together.  Sweet Aliyah clamoring the most enthusiastic acclamations, all the while my heart tugging in two polar opposite directions.

For many, it’s just something babies do, a normal achievement in the timeline of life.  For me and my littlest of loves, we’ve reached this milestone.  Together.

    This is so precious! I wish I could take photos like you do!
    I know exactly how you are feeling… Benjamin started solids three weeks ago. We waited a long time, six months of nursing. So I totally get the tears!
    He cut his first two teeth a few days ago. I was in the supermarket when I noticed it, and practically cried in the produce section. It’s all so emotional!
